The Bodgie - A.E. Manning

In 1954 psychologist A. E. Manning wrote The bodgie: a study in abnormal psychology. It fed a moral panic about adolescent behaviour by seemingly confirming that 1950s teenagers were more promiscuous and anti-social than previous generations. In fact historians have since shown that juvenile offending at this time was no worse than the previous two decades, and better than during the Second World War. (via)

What with “bodgies” growing their hair long and getting around in satin shirts, and “weegies” cutting their hair short and wearing jeans, confusion seems to be arising about the sex of some Australian adolescents  - Sydney Morning Herald, 1 February 1951
